Best Buy begins selling iPhone

Last Updated: September 9, 2008: 10:28 AM CST

Electronics retailer Best Buy Co. Inc. began its much-anticipated sales of Apple Inc.'s iPhone on Sunday, becoming the first U.S. chain to do so outside of Apple and AT&T Inc.'s own stores.

The Minneapolis-based chain is offering the popular cell phone that has a cult-like following in 970 full-size stores as well as 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores.

The company already sells Apple's Mac computers and iPod media players.

Apple began selling the second generation of its popular iPhone in July. Its two models cost $199 and $299 with two-year contracts and will be sold for the same price at Best Buy as they are at AT&T and Apple.

Best Buy shares closed Friday at $44.92.
